Catch-up TV, video on demand and recording get used interchangeably in IPTV marketing, and they are three genuinely different things with different limits. Knowing which is which saves you from expecting a feature that is not there — and from missing one that is.
The Short Version
- Catch-up TV — rewind a live channel to something already broadcast, up to 7 days back. Comes from the provider.
- VOD — a separate library of films and series you can start any time. Comes from the provider.
- Recording — saving a stream to your own device to keep. Comes from your player, not the subscription.
That last distinction is the one that trips people up, and it is worth understanding before you choose a device.
Catch-Up TV: The Underused One
Catch-up lets you scroll back through a channel's schedule and play something that has already aired. On Zorba IPTV the window is 7 days across 500+ channels.
Two things to be clear about. First, it is channel-specific — not every channel offers it, and the ones that do tend to be the major networks rather than obscure regional feeds. Second, it is a rolling window: at day eight, day one falls off.
Where it genuinely shines is time zones. If you are watching your home country's television from several time zones away, catch-up is what makes the schedule irrelevant — the news that aired at 4am is waiting when you get home. VOD: Not a Netflix Replacement
The on-demand library is separate from the live channels — a catalogue of films and series you browse and start whenever you like. The Zorba IPTV library runs to 100,000+ titles, updated weekly.

The practical way to use it is search rather than browse. If you have a title in mind, it is very likely there. If you want something to be suggested to you, it will frustrate you.
Recording: Your Player, Not Your Subscription
This is the one people get wrong most often. Recording is not a feature of an IPTV subscription. No provider records anything for you. Recording happens on your own device, performed by your player, saved to your own storage.
Which means it depends entirely on what you watch on:
- TiviMate (premium tier) — full recording and scheduled recording. The only genuinely good option, and Android-only.
- IPTV Smarters Pro — basic recording on some platforms, inconsistent.
- Apple TV players — no recording. tvOS does not permit it in the way Android does.
- Smart TV players — generally no recording.

Recordings also consume real storage — roughly 4–7 GB per hour at Full HD, more at 4K. A Firestick will fill up quickly, so plan on external storage if you intend to keep much.
Which One Do You Actually Need?
- Missed something that aired this week? Catch-up. No setup, nothing to configure.
- Want a specific film or series? VOD. Search rather than browse.
- Want to keep something permanently, or watch it offline? Recording — and you will need an Android device to do it.
- Living in a different time zone from the channels you watch? Catch-up, and it will matter more to you than either of the others.
For most households catch-up covers what they thought they needed recording for. It is worth trying that before buying hardware.
Check It Yourself
All three are testable during a trial. Pick a channel you know, scroll the guide back a day and see whether catch-up plays. Search the VOD library for a film you have in mind. If recording matters, test it on the device you would actually use.
