IPTV EPG Not Working? TV Guide Setup and Fixes

An empty guide, or one showing programmes that finished two hours ago. The guide is a separate file from your channels, which explains nearly every symptom — and the timezone is usually the culprit.

IPTV EPG Not Working? TV Guide Setup and Fixes — Zorba IPTV troubleshooting guide

Channels play perfectly, but the guide is blank — or worse, it is full of programmes that finished two hours ago. This is the most common complaint after buffering, and unlike buffering it is almost never a network problem. An empty or wrong EPG comes down to one of four causes, and the timezone is the usual culprit. Whether you are on Zorba IPTV or any other provider, the diagnosis is the same, and none of it takes more than a few minutes.

This guide explains what the guide data actually is, why it fails in these specific ways, and how to fix each one.

What the EPG Actually Is

The electronic programme guide is a completely separate file from your channels. Your subscription delivers two things: a list of streams, and an XML file describing what is scheduled on each of them. They arrive independently, they are refreshed on different timetables, and either can work while the other does not.

That single fact explains almost every symptom below. Channels playing with an empty guide is not a broken subscription — it is one of two downloads having succeeded.

Why the Guide Is Empty

It simply has not finished downloading

By far the most common cause, and the least interesting. The EPG file is substantially larger than the channel list — a full lineup means tens of thousands of programme entries. On a new setup it can take five minutes or more, and some players do not indicate progress at all.

Wait it out before changing anything. People routinely reinstall a player, re-enter credentials and contact support over a file that would have arrived on its own.

You are on an M3U link rather than Xtream Codes

A plain M3U playlist is a list of stream URLs and nothing else. It carries no guide data unless a separate EPG URL is supplied alongside it. Xtream Codes credentials deliver channels, guide and on-demand library together.

If your guide has never worked, check which one you set up. Switching to Xtream Codes in the player fixes it outright, and it takes a minute.

The player is set not to load it

Several players have an EPG toggle that is off by default, or a separate setting for how many days ahead to fetch. If that is set to zero or one, you will get almost nothing. Two to seven days is sensible.

Cached failure

If the first download failed, some players cache that failure and will not retry until forced. Look for a “refresh EPG” or “clear cache” option and use it before assuming anything is wrong upstream.

The Timezone Problem

This is the fault worth understanding properly, because it is the most common one that is genuinely fixable and the one people most often misdiagnose as a broken service.

Guide data is published with times attached to a specific timezone. Your player has to translate those into your local time. When the two disagree, every programme in the guide is shifted by a consistent number of hours — the guide is not broken, it is offset.

The signature is unmistakable: everything is wrong by exactly the same amount. If the guide says a programme is on at 20:00 and it is actually on at 18:00, you are two hours out — not experiencing random errors.

The fix is a setting called EPG time shift, EPG offset or similar, present in every serious player. Set it to the difference you observed. Two further points save a lot of confusion:

  • Check your device clock first. A streaming box with the wrong timezone produces exactly the same symptom, and adjusting the player offset to compensate for a wrong clock will break again the moment the clock corrects itself.
  • Expect it to move twice a year. Daylight saving changes on different dates in different countries. A guide that has been correct for months and suddenly shifts by an hour is almost always this, and it usually resolves itself within a day or two.

When Some Channels Have a Guide and Others Do Not

Different problem, different cause. This is a matching failure, not a download failure.

Each channel carries an identifier that has to match an entry in the guide file. When a channel's identifier is missing or does not match, that channel shows no programme information while everything around it works normally.

Some players let you correct this by mapping a channel to the right guide entry manually — useful for the two or three channels you actually watch, tedious beyond that. If a large number of channels are affected, it is a provider-side issue and worth reporting rather than working around. A good provider will fix the mapping; that is part of what maintenance means, and it is one of the things a free public playlist structurally cannot offer. Our comparison of free IPTV against paid goes into why.

Player Differences Worth Knowing

  • TiviMate has the most capable guide handling — per-channel mapping, a proper time shift setting and a configurable refresh interval. If the EPG matters to you, this is the player to use.
  • IPTV Smarters loads the guide automatically from Xtream Codes credentials with very little configuration. Fewer options, fewer things to get wrong.
  • VLC has no EPG at all. If you are testing in VLC, an empty guide is expected rather than a fault — see our guide to watching IPTV on a PC or Mac.
  • Kodi handles guide data well through a PVR add-on, but the configuration lives in the add-on rather than in Kodi itself, which is where people get lost.

Once It Works, Make It Usable

A correct guide across thousands of channels is still unusable if you have to scroll past two thousand entries to reach the twenty you watch. Hide the categories you do not need, build a favourites list, and set the guide to show favourites by default.

This takes about ten minutes and is the difference between a channel list and actual television. Our guide to organising IPTV channels walks through it, and it pairs naturally with catch-up and recording — both of which depend on accurate guide data to work at all.

The Guide on Zorba IPTV

Zorba IPTV delivers a full EPG over Xtream Codes, so the guide arrives with your channels rather than needing a separate URL, and it works in any mainstream player. Maintaining channel-to-guide mapping is part of the service — if you find channels missing programme data, report them and they get fixed, which is precisely the difference between a maintained service and a playlist nobody is looking after.

If you want to check the guide quality before paying, that is a reasonable thing to test and it takes one evening. A free trial needs no card details, and plans are listed on the pricing page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my IPTV EPG not working?

Usually one of four things: it has not finished downloading yet, you are on an M3U link rather than Xtream Codes, the EPG is disabled in your player settings, or a failed download has been cached. Wait five minutes first, then work through the other three.

Why is my TV guide showing the wrong times?

A timezone mismatch. Everything will be out by exactly the same number of hours. Fix it with the EPG time shift setting in your player — but check your device clock first, because a wrong clock produces the identical symptom.

How long does the EPG take to load?

Up to five minutes on a first setup with a large channel list, and some players show no progress while it happens. Give it that long before deciding anything is broken.

Why do some channels have no programme information?

Their channel identifier does not match an entry in the guide file. Some players let you map it manually. If it affects many channels rather than a few, report it to your provider.

Does a free IPTV playlist come with a guide?

Rarely, and rarely accurately. Guide data has to be sourced and matched to channels continuously, which is maintenance work nobody does for free. This is the single biggest day-to-day difference between free and paid.

My guide worked yesterday and is an hour out today. Why?

Almost certainly daylight saving. Countries change on different dates, so a guide can be briefly offset until the source and your device agree again. It usually corrects itself within a day or two.

Conclusion

The guide is a separate file from your channels, and nearly every EPG complaint follows from that. Empty usually means it has not arrived yet or you are on the wrong playlist type. Wrong times mean a timezone offset, not a broken service. Gaps on individual channels mean a mapping problem worth reporting.

None of these are network faults, which is why the buffering checklist will not help — for that, our buffering and freezing guide is the right place. Fix the guide, spend ten minutes on favourites, and the same subscription stops feeling like a list of streams and starts feeling like television.
