If you own a recent Samsung or LG television you can run IPTV on it directly, with no extra box, no sideloading and nothing plugged into the back. This guide covers how to do that on both platforms — and, just as importantly, when the native route is the wrong choice and a cheap streaming stick will serve you better.
Two Routes, and the Honest Trade-Off
Samsung uses Tizen and LG uses webOS. Neither runs Android, so the Android-only players are unavailable — but both have app stores containing IPTV players that work perfectly well.
The trade-off is performance. Smart TV processors are built to decode video cheaply, not to run responsive applications. Everything works, but menus draw more slowly and channel changes take a beat longer than on a dedicated streaming device. Whether that matters depends entirely on how you watch: a viewer who picks a channel and stays there will barely notice, while a habitual channel-flicker will find it grating within a week.
Samsung (Tizen)
Two players are worth considering, both installable from the Samsung App Store with no sideloading:
- Smart IPTV (SIPTV) — the long-standing choice on Samsung. Small one-off fee after a trial period.
- IPTV Smarters — free, and familiar if you use it on a phone as well.
- Press Home and open Apps
- Search for your chosen player and install it
- Open it and choose the Xtream Codes login option
- Enter the server URL, username and password from your welcome message
- Wait for the guide to populate — a few minutes on first launch
Note that Smart IPTV on Samsung is sometimes configured through a web page using your TV's MAC address rather than typed on-screen. If the app shows a MAC address and a URL instead of a login form, that is the flow — the address is on screen and support can walk you through it.
LG (webOS)
The same two players are available, and the process is nearly identical:
- Press Home and open the LG Content Store
- Search for Smart IPTV or IPTV Smarters and install
- Launch it and select Xtream Codes
- Enter your credentials exactly as supplied
- Let the guide finish loading, then build a favourites list
LG's Magic Remote makes navigation slightly easier than Samsung's directional pad — a pointer beats arrow keys when a channel list runs to thousands of entries.
Always Choose Xtream Codes
Both platforms offer M3U as an alternative. Take Xtream Codes every time: it pulls channel categories and the full guide automatically, keeps on-demand content in its own section, and reconnects more gracefully after a drop. M3U delivers one enormous ungrouped list with unreliable guide data — on a Smart TV, where navigation is already the weak point, that is a genuinely poor experience.
Build Favourites Before Anything Else
This matters more on a Smart TV than anywhere else, because the remote is the slowest part of the system. Twenty favourites turn an unusable list into a usable television. Do it on day one.
When a Streaming Stick Is the Better Answer
Be honest with yourself about your set. Add a Firestick or Android TV box if any of these apply:
- Your TV is more than about five years old. Older Tizen and webOS versions are slow enough to be genuinely irritating, and newer app versions eventually stop supporting them.
- You want the best guide. TiviMate is Android-only and it is materially better than anything on a Smart TV. If the EPG matters to you, that alone justifies the hardware.
- You change channels constantly. The responsiveness gap is most obvious exactly here.
- You want to record. Smart TV players generally cannot; TiviMate's premium tier can.

Smart TV Troubleshooting
- App missing from the store. Availability varies by TV model and region. If one player is absent, try the other.
- Login rejected. On-screen keyboards make typos easy — re-enter carefully, watching for a stray space.
- Buffering when a phone on the same Wi-Fi is fine. The TV's aerial is usually weaker and it may be on the 2.4 GHz band. Move it to 5 GHz, or run an ethernet cable — most sets have a port. See our guide to internet speed for 4K IPTV.
- App crashing or slow after weeks. Restart the TV properly — unplug it for thirty seconds rather than using standby, which does not clear memory.
