Apple TV is the odd one out among streaming devices, and every IPTV guide that treats it like a Firestick will send you down a dead end. There is no sideloading, no Downloader app, and no TiviMate. What there is, though, is a fast device with the best remote in the category and two perfectly good players in the App Store. Here is how to set it up properly.
Everything below applies to any Xtream Codes subscription. Zorba IPTV is used as the worked example because it is delivered over that standard rather than a proprietary app — which is precisely why it runs on tvOS at all. Providers who ship their own Android-only app simply cannot be used on an Apple TV.
What Makes Apple TV Different
tvOS is a closed platform. Apps come from the App Store or they do not come at all, and Apple does not permit the installation of arbitrary packages the way Android-based devices do.
This has one real cost and several benefits. The cost is that TiviMate is unavailable — it is Android-only, and it is the best IPTV player there is. The benefits are that setup is far simpler (no developer options, no sideloading), the hardware is considerably faster than a Firestick, and apps are reviewed before they reach you.
Which Players Are Available
- IPTV Smarters Pro — the sensible default. Free, handles Xtream Codes properly, and if you already use it on an iPhone the interface will be familiar.
- GSE Smart IPTV — more configurable, with clearer control over audio tracks and subtitles. Worth choosing if you watch in more than one language.
Both are on the tvOS App Store. Install whichever you like — your credentials work in both simultaneously, so trying each costs nothing but a few minutes. The player comparison goes into more detail on how they differ.
Setting It Up
- Open the App Store on your Apple TV
- Search for IPTV Smarters Pro (or GSE Smart IPTV) and install it
- Launch the app and choose to add a playlist or user
- Select the Xtream Codes API option — not M3U
- Enter the server URL, username and password from your Zorba IPTV welcome message
- Wait for the channel list and guide to load — a few minutes on first launch
Typing on an Apple TV is the worst part of this. If you have an iPhone or iPad signed into the same Apple account, a notification appears offering to let you type on the phone instead — use it. It eliminates the most common cause of a failed login, which is a typo or a stray space in a long server URL.
Always Choose Xtream Codes
Both players offer M3U as an alternative. Take Xtream Codes every time. It pulls channel categories and the full guide automatically, keeps on-demand content in a separate section, and reconnects more gracefully when your connection stumbles. M3U gives you one enormous ungrouped list with unreliable guide data.
What You Gain Over a Firestick
- Speed. Apple TV hardware is substantially quicker than any Firestick. Menus draw instantly and channel changes are noticeably faster.
- The remote. The Siri Remote's touch surface makes scrolling long channel lists far less painful than a directional pad.
- Stability. tvOS does not degrade over weeks the way a Firestick left permanently on tends to.

What You Give Up
Chiefly TiviMate, and specifically its electronic programme guide, which is materially better than anything on tvOS. If the guide is central to how you watch — scrolling a week ahead, organising dozens of groups — you will notice the gap.

AirPlay Is a Fallback, Not a Solution
You can stream from an iPhone to an Apple TV over AirPlay, and people often try this first. It works, but it drains the phone, ties it up for the duration, and adds a link in the chain that can drop. Install the player natively on the Apple TV and use AirPlay only when you want to show someone something quickly.
Troubleshooting
- Login rejected. Re-enter using the iPhone keyboard prompt. Long server URLs and on-screen keyboards are a bad combination.
- App not in the store. Availability varies by region. If one player is missing, search for the other.
- Buffering on Wi-Fi. Apple TV sits behind the television like everything else. Use the ethernet port if your model has one.
- Guide empty on first launch. The EPG downloads separately and takes a few minutes. If it is still blank afterwards, force a refresh in the player's settings.
Try It First
Apple TV models vary in age and capability, so the only reliable test is your own.
